THE BACKGROUND
Created by a professional landscape designer as a personal oasis, Jardín Phares is a large private garden in Madrid, Spain, that showcases more than 100 plant species arranged in a series of distinct environments. Despite the garden's carefully curated design, a conventional lighting system installed approximately 10 years earlier was never completed, leaving the landscape unlit after dark.
THE CHALLENGE
Each area of the garden features intentional plant combinations and its own visual character. Treating large areas as fixed lighting zones would have reduced the impact of the design. The owner wanted the flexibility to highlight individual trees, hedges, and planting groups independently while avoiding the complexity of rewiring the existing electrical setup. The goal was to achieve fixture-level control, allowing each luminaire to be programmed independently as an individual zone. This approach would allow the owner to illuminate only select trees and shrubs while creating customized lighting moods for different areas of the garden.
THE SOLUTION
The owner selected FX Luminaire for its ability to deliver fixture-level control without requiring a complex installation. The design team repurposed the existing electrical infrastructure by consolidating it into a single two-wire path connected to a 300 W Luxor® Controller. Then, they outfitted the garden with a range of fixtures, including Runa™ VE Hanging Pendants to create natural moonlighting effects, Designer™ JB Directional Down Lights to accent trees and planting areas, Designer™ FB Petite Accent Lights to provide safe navigation and ambient lighting, and Exa™ XA-70 Grande Accent Lights to highlight architectural features. The system gave the owner individual control of each fixture. Lighting scenes, intensity, and color could be customized without additional wiring. This approach simplified installation while providing flexibility for effective long-term lighting management.
THE RESULT
The expansive garden can now be safely accessed and fully appreciated after dark. With every fixture operating as its own zone, the owner has created 25 custom lighting themes that can be easily activated to highlight specific landscape features, including trees, hedges, and other elements. Using the Luxor App, these themes can be adjusted remotely to create different lighting compositions depending on the desired effects. Dimming and color add another layer of creative flexibility, allowing the landscape to take on entirely different moods throughout the year while showcasing the garden’s rich botanical diversity.
